I've just finished a Japanese woodcut called Polar Bear.
In this month’s blog I'm going to chronicle the stages I went through to create it.
I used gouache for the first time in my initial sketch,(above left). It felt a bit like watercolour, but when I painted different colours on top to get the feel I wanted (above right), the colours underneath were
re-activated, which was interesting.
My mother died a couple of months ago and this piece is in honour of her.
The polar bear had become a significant shared sort of joke.
I've swung between tears, concentration, appreciative sadness and a variety of memories.
